What to check when a panic bar door will not latch
Common signs that an exit device, strike, closer, or door alignment needs professional attention on a commercial exit door.
Diagnose the opening
The symptom can involve more than one piece of hardware.
What you may notice
- The bar releases the door but the latch does not reset
- The exit door closes yet remains loose at the strike
- The bar feels soft, uneven, jammed, or unusually hard to press
- The door works from one side but does not secure reliably after closing
Possible causes
- Latch and strike misalignment
- Worn internal parts in the rim device or vertical rod system
- Closer performance that does not carry the door through the latch cycle
- Door sag, loose fasteners, or damage from repeated impact
